Beyond Exclusion: Suman’s Journey to a Dignified Life

"True empowerment is bringing those pushed to the margins back into the mainstream, gifted with both skill and self-respect."
Born in Mahtthi village of Samastipur, Suman Kumari (42) has lived a life that is a courageous rebellion against inhuman suffering and social boycott. Belonging to the transgender community, Suman faced a level of rejection that is hard to imagine—being expelled from her home by her own mother at a young age and facing constant ridicule during her education. The segment of society that refused to accept her used offensive language and physical violence, inflicting deep emotional and physical scars.
Suman endured this inhuman pain with immense dignity at every level. Her deepest wish was to see her community integrated into the mainstream of society. To turn this vision into reality, Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) stepped forward. First, she was provided with professional training in parlor services to help her establish an independent identity. Furthermore, to liberate her from the constant harassment and insecurity often faced in public transport, she was provided with training to drive an E-rickshaw, empowering her to navigate the world on her own terms.
Through financial support and technical assistance provided by DVAS, a new chapter of Suman’s life began. Today, Suman is no longer dependent on anyone's mercy; she drives her own E-rickshaw and earns her livelihood with pride.
Suman’s journey is living proof that when the transgender community receives the right training and support, they can become a vital part of the mainstream, changing not only their own lives but the perspective of society. Her success sends a powerful message: the right to dignity belongs to every human being, regardless of their identity.
